How are parcels delivered?

An attempt will be made to deliver the parcel personally and a signature collected where the sender has requested this additional service. However, if there is no one in attendance at the address at the time of delivery one of the following options will be used.

The parcel will be checked for delivery instructions on the parcel. (Delivery instructions can be requested when ordering goods, and can override the need to collect a signature when the addressee is not available to receive the parcel).

If there are no delivery instructions on the parcel and a signature is not required, the delivery driver will look for a safe location at the address where the parcel can be left. This arrangement is referred to as Safe Drop parcel delivery (see below for more information about how we choose a safe location). A notification card will then be placed in the addressee's letterbox informing them of the location of the parcel.

Delivery to the address will not be completed if a safe location cannot be easily identified, there are no delivery instructions, or a signature is required. In these circumstances, a notification card will be placed in the addressee's letterbox informing them of the Australia Post outlet where the parcel has been transferred for collection, and the expected time after which it will be available.

Safe Drop delivery only applies to non-signature parcels.

Delivery guidelines for Safe Drop Parcel Delivery

Safe Drop Parcel Delivery allows delivery drivers to leave a parcel that does not require a signature in a safe location if the addressee is not at home and the parcel does not fit into their letterbox. A Safe Drop Notification Card will be placed in the customer’s letterbox informing them where the parcel is located. Safe Drop Parcel Delivery will only be used when:

  • the parcel can be left in a place that is not visible from the street or public view
  • the parcel can be left in a place that is clear of potential damage due to factors such as weather conditions, interference or damage by pets etc
  • the parcel does not clearly contain liquor
  • the parcel is in good condition i.e. undamaged
  • the address is clear and unambiguous
  • the parcel does not require a signature.

if any of the above conditions cannot be met, then the standard carding processes will apply. Typical safe locations for parcels are:

  • under/inside a carport
  • on or inside a sheltered front veranda or porch
  • inside a front portico
  • behind sheltered fixed/solid structures e.g. plant pots
  • behind flyscreen door (if parcel size is suitable).

Premises where it is obvious that the parcel cannot be left safely (i.e. flat and apartment buildings, units and properties with an exposed frontage to public view and access) will not be included under this delivery arrangement, under normal circumstances. The discretion to use Safe Drop delivery arrangements will only be applied where it is clear that a safe location is available. If there is any doubt as to the availability of such a location, standard carding procedures will be applied. Additionally, if parcels are sent using a signature service such as eParcel or Receipted Delivery, standard carding procedures will also apply.

What are your delivery requirements?

If it is convenient for parcels to be left at your address when you are not there, ensure there is a safe location where the parcel may be left (as detailed above). This location should be out of public view, protected from the weather and unlikely to be accessible by pets or other animals. Some customers may opt to provide a box where we can leave parcels safely. If you do not wish a parcel to be left at your address because you are unlikely to be available at that address to accept the parcel, you can request the sender to attach a Do Not Safe Drop label to the parcel which will ensure it is transferred to the local Australia Post outlet for collection
